Eight years ago (2012), I retired from a thirty-five-year career in commercial real estate in San Diego. Greed and Deceit is the third book in my “Brice Miller and Annie Youngblood Series.” My inspiration for this series was born during my volunteer service— serving weekly meals to wounded Marines—at the Liberty Center, Balboa Hospital, San Diego, from 2009-2013 (See- “Purple Heart Hero Support” on right). Those Marines that my friends and I served meals to exemplified the Marine Corps values of Honor, Courage, and Commitment. Words can’t begin to describe the upbeat and positive impressions these young men made on us.
Prior to my involvement with Purple Heart Hero Support, I was a volunteer with the Multiple Sclerosis Angel Program for approximately five years. During that time, I regularly visited Bob Farris (pictured lower left-hand corner below), and we became very close friends. Bob was afflicted with Multiple Sclerosis in his early twenties. When I met him in his early forties, much of his body was paralyzed, but his heart and mind were untouched. He loved the San Diego Padres baseball team, and he had a dry sense of humor which he often displayed. My wife and I shared many laughs and happy times with Bob as we drove him around town in a handicap van…Petco Park for Padres games, Balboa Park, Ocean Beach boardwalk, Swami’s lookout in Encinitas, etc. He never complained about his physical afflictions, save during election time when his radio played non-stop political ads. Bob passed away from complications associated with his MS when he was forty-five. My wife and I loved Bob like a son and we think of him often.
I currently volunteer twice a week at the USS Midway Museum in San Diego as a docent. Meeting visitors at the museum, from all over the world, and sharing stories with fellow volunteers has been a rewarding and gratifying experience. Being around other volunteers at the museum, who served in the military during Vietnam, has also provided me with an element of healing and closure on a very unpopular war.
I graduated from Boston University with a degree in business administration in 1969. Shortly thereafter, I was commissioned in the United States Navy as a Supply Corps officer. My active duty stint in the Navy included a 12-month tour and 6-month extension in Vietnam. I served at the Fleet Air Support Unit, Da Nang Air Base for nine months in 1970 before I was transferred to the SEABEE staff in Saigon for nine months.
My wife and I have been happily married for forty-one years, and we have two adult daughters who are also happily married. We live in north San Diego County.
I hope you enjoy reading Greed and Deceit. I think you’ll also like meeting several new characters… Mary Phillips, Mike Hall, and Beena Waleed. This book is now available on Amazon. If you click the “Amazon” button on the front page of my website, you will be directed to my books.
